MEET OUR RABBI: HOWARD A COHEN

Rabbi Howard A Cohen joined Shirat Hayam in August 2013.  Previously, Rabbi Cohen served as the visiting Rabbi at Congregation Or Hatzafon in Fairbanks, Alaska; Dean of Jewish life at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, North Carolina; and at Congregation Beth El in Bennington, Vermont.  He was ordained by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1994.  While in rabbinical school, he founded Burning Bush Adventurers, a Jewish camping program for families. He also served as a chaplain at SCI: Graterford, and, in addition, was the Rabbi of the Jewish congregation at Graterford.

Rabbi Cohen is also a retired firefighter, achieving the rank of deputy chief. He currently serves as president and a facilitator for the Green Mountain Critical Incident Management team.

As a retired firefighter, he is a dedicated volunteer instructor with Africa Fire Mission. Before entering the rabbinate, Rabbi Cohen worked with at-risk youth for Outward Bound. He has served as the board chair of the Southwest Vermont Council on Aging for seven years.

In addition to his year-round love of outdoor pursuits, he enjoys performing magic shows under the name Professor Nehoc and spending as much time as he can with his children, grandchildren, and his wonderful wife, Gail.
